Exhaust System Components

Exhaust Manifold The exhaust manifold collects exhaust gases from the engine's cylinders and channels them into a single pipe. It's typically made of cast iron or stainless steel and bolts directly to the engine.

Catalytic Converter The catalytic converter is an emissions control device that converts harmful pollutants (carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides) into less harmful gases. It's required by law and is one of the most expensive exhaust components.

Oxygen Sensors Located before and after the catalytic converter, oxygen sensors monitor exhaust gas composition. This data helps the engine computer optimize the air-fuel mixture for efficiency and emissions compliance.

Muffler The muffler reduces exhaust noise through a series of chambers and baffles that cancel out sound waves. Different muffler designs produce different sound levels and tones.

Resonator Some vehicles include a resonator in addition to the muffler. It fine-tunes the exhaust sound by canceling specific frequencies.

Exhaust Pipes and Hangers Pipes connect all components, and rubber hangers mount the system to the underside of the vehicle, absorbing vibration and allowing for thermal expansion.

Hissing or popping sounds — may signal a leak at a gasket or connection
Decreased fuel efficiency — exhaust leaks can throw off sensor readings
Check engine light — often triggered by catalytic converter or oxygen sensor issues
Vibrations — a failing exhaust hanger or cracked pipe can cause vibrations
Smell of exhaust inside the cabin — this is a safety emergency; get it checked immediately
